Our homeland in pictures and words …

The Pays de Herve … this land is enclosed by the rivers Vesdre and Meuse, at the heart of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine and the Aachen-Liège-Maastricht triangle. As well as being a privileged geographic location, it is 450 km2 of hedged farmlands, hedgerows and standard (high stem) tree orchards making an exceptional rural landscape.

The Pays de Herve also has an exceptional heritage, steeped in history and tradition : the Val-Dieu Abbey, the village of Clermont-sur-Berwinne (listed Most Beautiful Village in Wallonia), the Henri Chapelle American Military Cemetery at Hombourg, the Moresnet viaduct, the historic centre of Herve, the charming small village of Olne … without forgetting the numerous castles, testimony to a prosperous past.

Traditions and folklore instil an inescapable charm in our region as they radiate their magic : the classic nail trees at Olne, the ancestral processions such as "del Céqwemme" at Herve and also the ancient brotherhoods, the blessing of the animals at St Hubert at Aubel, the nut fair at Henri-Chapelle, the carnivals or the more famous Cavalcade at Herve, another large carnival procession, all make us proud and give us a chance to have fun and enjoy wild parties !

But now let’s come to the table for the main course ! The pleasures of eating have always been an integral part of tourism ! Evidence ? Of course, but the local gastronomy today has evolved, it is more inventive, lighter and more inspired by local produce. In the Pays de Herve these products are many. On the throne are Herve cheese and syrup of apples and pears. Gourmet meat eaters will be delighted by the number of specialities in the delicatessens of the region, with lev’gos (liver sausage) being at the top of the list. In the Pays de Herve, good-eating is accompanied by good-drinking. Local cider and beers will satisfy the connoisseur’s palate again and again.

Follow our paths, walking whets the appetite … On foot, on horseback or by bicycle, the lanes of the Pays de Herve immerse you in green. The old disused railway line – call it Line 38 – has kept its cinder track. It is the real backbone of the Pays de Herve.

The Pays de Herve, a favourite dish, has kept its privileged image between the rivers Vesdre and Meuse, and between the industrial basin of Liège and the wool town of Verviers.
